Cycling Combo | The wonder of New Perspectives

The New Perspectives deck in Pioneer is a powerful combo deck that revolves around the card New Perspectives, which allows you to cycle cards in your hand for free. By chaining cycling cards together, you can draw through your entire deck, gaining life with Renewed Faith and eventually winning through a variety of win conditions like Thassa's Oracle or Shark Typhoon.

WHY PLAY THIS DECK

  1. Powerful combo potential: The Vizier New Perspectives deck can draw through its entire deck with relative ease, allowing it to set up powerful win conditions like Thassa's Oracle or Shark Typhoon. This makes the deck a formidable force in the right hands and can catch opponents off guard.

  2. Resilience: The deck has a number of ways to protect its key combo pieces and can often continue cycling even if some of those pieces are removed. This makes it a difficult deck to disrupt, especially for opponents who aren't familiar with its mechanics.

  3. Flexibility: The deck can play both a control and combo game, depending on the situation. With a suite of removal spells and counterspells, the deck can slow down aggressive opponents and control the board while it sets up its combo. This gives it a degree of flexibility that can be useful in a variety of matchups.

  4. Unique gameplay: The Vizier New Perspectives deck has a unique gameplay style that can be appealing to players who are looking for something different. With a focus on cycling and drawing through your deck, the deck can be a refreshing change from other combo decks or control decks in the format.

STRATEGY

Early Game:

  • Use your early turns to set up your mana base and get your cycling engine going. Look for Vizier of Tumbling Sands and Shefet Monitor to help untap lands and search for more lands.
  • Prioritize playing New Perspectives as soon as possible, as it will allow you to cycle through your deck and set up your win conditions.

Mid Game:

  • Once you have New Perspectives on the board, start cycling through your deck with cards like Renewed Faith and Migration Path. Use Shadow of the Grave to recycle your cycling cards and keep the engine going.
  • Look for win conditions like Thassa's Oracle or Shark Typhoon to close out the game. Use Boon of the Wish-Giver to draw additional cards and help find your win conditions.
  • Use your control elements like Cast Out and Countervailing Winds to protect your combo and disrupt your opponent's game plan.

Late Game:

  • If the game goes long, don't be afraid to use Shark Typhoon to create a large flying creature that can attack and block effectively. Thassa's Oracle can also be a powerful finisher, especially if you can gain a lot of life through Renewed Faith and other cycling cards.
  • Be aware of your opponent's removal spells and try to protect your key combo pieces with Countervailing Winds.

MULLIGAN STRATEGY

Keep:

  • Hands with at least two lands, one of which is a Triome or a Spara's Headquarters.
  • Hands with Vizier of Tumbling Sands and/or Shefet Monitor.
  • Hands with New Perspectives and at least two cycling cards.
  • Hands with Boon of the Wish-Giver or Shark Typhoon as a backup plan.

Mulligan:

  • Hands with no lands or only one land.
  • Hands with only control elements and no way to set up your cycling engine.
  • Hands with no early interaction against aggressive decks.
  • Hands with too many high-cost spells and not enough early plays.

SIDEBOARD PLAN

Against Aggro:

-2 Countervailing Winds, -2 Boon of the Wish-Giver,
+3 Fatal Push, +1 Authority of the Consuls

Aggro decks can quickly overwhelm you with fast creatures and deal a lot of damage before you can set up your combo. To combat this, we bring in more removal with Fatal Push, which can take care of many low-to-the-ground threats, and Authority of the Consuls, which slows down the opponent's aggression. We also take out some of our combo pieces in Boon of the Wish-Giver and Countervailing Winds, which may be too slow or ineffective against these decks.

Against Control:

-2 Cast Out, -1 Shefet Monitor,
+3 Mystical Dispute

Control decks aim to disrupt your combo and prevent you from gaining traction in the game. To counter this, we bring in Mystical Dispute, which can counter their counterspells or important spells, and take out some of our less effective cards like Cast Out, and Shefet Monitor.

Against Midrange:

-1 Boon of the Wish-Giver, -2 Renewed Faith, -1 Vizier of Tumbling Sands,
+2 Vizier of Many Faces, +2 Duress

Midrange decks are typically more grindy and can often disrupt our combo through targeted removal or hand disruption. To combat this, we bring in Vizier of Many Faces, which can copy their important creatures and provide us with some additional value, and Duress, which can help us strip their hand of any key spells. We take out some of our more expendable combo pieces in Boon of the Wish-Giver and Renewed Faith, and one Vizier of Tumbling Sands.

Against Combo:

-2 Boon of the Wish-Giver, -1 Shefet Monitor,
+2 Duress, +1 Thassa's Oracle

Against other combo decks, we need to be able to disrupt their combo while also protecting our own. We bring in Duress to strip their hand of key spells and Thassa's Oracle as an additional win condition. We take out some of our less effective combo pieces in Boon of the Wish-Giver and Shefet Monitor.
